Castle of San Felipe de Lara

Maritime piracy made that the need for a guardian at the exit and entry of boats in Izabal arose. That was how they built the castle of San Felipe.

Year 1560 marked the beginning of the Castle, when he began to build it to collect taxes. Then over time the building was expanded and became the building can be visited today.

With the passage of the years, maritime activity in the area declined considerably and Río Dulce lost much of its economic importance and now the castle remains as a reminder, witness past times and tourist attraction.
