![]()
The capital city of Guatemala is the most modern and cosmopolitan city in Central America. Fast paced and vibrant, Guatemala City (or Guate as it is known locally) is a mixture of old and new and has a distinct Latin charm. Today in Guatemala City has two and a half million inhabitants, its location and facilities of the international airport “La Aurora” make it the starting point to see the rest of Guatemala.
Guatemala City was founded in 1776, after a devastating earthquake destroyed the old Spanish capital of Central America, “The city of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala,” now known as Antigua Guatemala (or simply Antigua). Guatemala City is spread out over a valley with the Agua volcano dominates the skyline.
Guatemala City has an active cultural life. Most museums in the country are here, plus galleries and exhibitions of paintings, photographs, prints, sculptures by Guatemalan artists, theaters also have a wide range of works by playwrights Guatemalans. And if you want a night of dancing, music and fun, enjoy a meal or just a walk, we recommend the “living zone” area of the best hotels in the city.
