Natural Attractions of Petén

There are two Peten Biosphere Reserves, seven National Parks, Wildlife Refuges five, four Protected Biotopes three Cultural Monuments and Biological Reserve.
All these places, in addition to the wonderful nature preserve, have archeological sites of great value.
Protected areas
The total of protected land in Petén is enormous. The area they occupy, to almost 17,000 square kilometers, is as large as the departments of Totonicapán, Quiché, Quetzaltenango, Solola, Chimaltenango, Guatemala Sacatepéquez and together. There there, at least, two biosphere reserves, seven national parks, five wildlife refuges, four Protected Biotopes three Monuments Cultural and Biological Reserve. All, apart from the splendid nature preserve, have archeological sites of great value.
Needless to say that each of these zones represents a marvelous example of the creation. For visitors, it shows the possibility of spending the night in a tent, perhaps enlivened by the roar of lions in the knowledge that in the morning you can wake to the cries of howler monkeys. Then, maybe you are interested in walking quietly in a footpath education, study birds or admire the antics of the monkeys, a family of coatis see or appreciate the powerful flapping of wild turkeys. You may want to sit in the shade of a tree, near ruins of the Mayan past.
Adventure and exploration
It is advisable to browse the most impressive three rivers: The Passion with wide meanders, which prolongs the enjoyment of being in a world of color, warmth, chlorophyll and vigorous signs of life; Usumacinta, the lord of rivers, powerful, sometimes sometimes violent and gentle, suitable for experts as well as the San Pedro and its tributaries, in the plains of the northwest, a path of unimaginable beauty that passes south of the area of inland freshwater marshes largest in Central America.
If the visitor wishes to enter the world of the dark, dank bowels of the earth, you may want to start from the caves of Naj-Tunich, for those of Aktun-kan or those of Jobitzinaj. They have the advantage of being well known and rich in the details typical of karst caves stalactites, vaults, chambers, passageways, “nest of pearls”, the eternal drip of water and the acrid smell of mold and bat.
If I wanted something more, there are still plenty of caves waiting to be discovered.
