Nature in Guatemala
Guatemala is home to an endless amount of different species that live in habitats ranging from rain forests to arid valleys and Cloud and wetlands and coastal shores. The government is actively engaged in a strategy that includes sustainable tourism as a proactive way to protect nature and cultural heritage.
The cornerstones of this strategy consist of more than 30 protected areas in Guatemala, including national parks and biological reserves. Tikal National Park is one of the main attractions of Guatemala, this park within the larger Maya Biosphere Reserve contains the magnificent archaeological site of Tikal, as well as 57,600 hectares (142,000 acres) of primary forest. Is also one of the best places to observe wildlife in Guatemala.
Within its 19 different ecosystems, Guatemala has an abundance of animals. Include 250 species of mammals, 600 species of birds and 200 species of reptiles and amphibians and many species of butterflies and other insects. You can see the national bird, the Resplendent Quetzal in various parts of the country. This bird is small but exceptionally beautiful. Other interesting birds include scarlet macaw Guatemala, along with many species of parrots, toucans, motmots, hummingbirds, warblers, orioles, just to name a few. Read the rest of this entry »
