It was the cultural, economic, religious, political and educational for the entire region until the capital moved to Guatemala City today after a devastating earthquake in 1773. The conquerors chose the location because the old capital had flooded in 1541. The valley provided a suitable water source and gives u or n of the best climates in the world.
