Izabal
At the door of the Caribbean, very close to the sun, beautiful beaches and many places to know, Izabal is a paradise for an unforgettable vacation. In Izabal abundant natural reserves have become the most attractive sites in the region, among them are Lake Izabal, Rio Dulce, Bocas del Polochic, Punta de Manabique and Biotope Chocón Machacas, not to mention the beautiful white sand beaches.
The culture of Izabal, unlike the rest of the country by the Caribbean influence, also attracts visitors. In this department are Mayan archaeological sites of great importance as Quirigua.
Another of its main attractions, and because it is the only department where Garifuna population, is the rhythm and dance of Livingston, not to mention the delicious coconut bread making their inhabitants.
Izabal has great tourism development. However, for its economy, since time immemorial, port activities have been of great importance both for the department and for the entire country. For business or entertainment, Izabal have much to offer … It’s definitely a place that can not stop exploring because they always find a fascinating landscape.
History, people and culture
The most important Caribbean black population and the only department in the country are the Garinagu, better known as Garifuna. This ethnic group who just turned two hundred years of American life (1797-1997), Caribbean Arawak linguistic affiliation, allows us to enter into a different culture and history of the Maya.
Hernan Cortes in his trip to the Higueras in 1504, passed through the port of Nito and in his letters to the king said it was an important commercial port. Indeed, the area of what is now Izabal, was an area ripe for trade routes, given its natural corridors created by the river and lake routes.
