The city of Huehuetenango is 190 km from the capital of Guatemala, and 85 km from the Mexican border in Mesilla, enjoys a cool climate and pleasant for being ubidcada to 1900 meters high at the foot of the mountain chain that Cuchumatanes has the highest mountain peak in the country at 3800 meters. From the viewpoint Dieguez Olaverri will appreciate the wonderful, mountainous volcanic landscape of this department. The department of Huehuetenango is varied, has places like Magdalena lagoon, Yolnabaj, caves, archaeological sites and beautiful landscapes that can be traversed on foot or horseback.

Most of the inhabitants of the department are of Mayan ethnic Mam, Chuj, Kanjobal, each town uses a costume different from its neighbor. Several rivers begin in this beautiful apartment, the river Cuilco Chixoy Selegua, San Juan and others. Most people work in agriculture: garlic, corn, wheat, beans, potatoes and oranges, and an excellent coffee as well as textiles, ceramics, hats, baskets and many other crafts.

During colonial times, Huehuetenango was the first region in contact with the Spanish in 1524 where the Indian chief Balam Kaibi confronted them. There is still a citadel that was built Zaculeu period in the tenth century and abandoned the site that was submitted by the Spanish. Huehuetenango is now a thriving city that actively contributes to the economy.
