The admirable high Cuchumatanes
For many people Huehuetenango and Cuchumatanes are synonymous. But the first is the name of the 22 departments of Guatemala and the second is the name given to the highest mountain massif in Central America.
The lands rise up to heaven Huehuetenango in the western corner of the country. Thousands of years ago, this land was formed from ocean beds and long passed for the establishment of natural communities that exist today.
The greatness of Cuchumatanes
According to geographers, the mountain chain formed Cuchumatanes aligned with several saws. Besides bearing the name of the string, the others are called Chama, Santa Cruz and Maya Mountains.
It is believed that the succession of mountains, along the complex chain of Chuacús he rose from the seabed for about 370 million years.

Much later, converted into Cretaceous ocean floor, the Cuchumatanes were covered with huge volumes of sediments rich in calcium carbonate. Later these sediments became limestone, whitish in color and water soluble, substrate of the present landscape.
